Civil War Battlefields

The 1864 Battle for Atlanta

The fall of Atlanta in 1864 was pivotal in determining the war’s outcome. This important Union victory assured U. S. president Abraham Lincoln’s reelection and ultimately led to the Confederates’ defeat. Read the tour description below, and for any questions about our Battle for Atlanta tour, or any other tour visit the contact page.

The tour stops first at Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield.

On June 27, 1864, Kennesaw Mountain, located about twenty miles northwest of Atlanta in Cobb County, became the scene for one of the Atlanta campaign’s major actions in the Civil War (1861-65).

On the next stop, the Atlanta History Center.

Explore the most critical conflict in our nation’s history through one of the nation’s largest exhibitions on the Civil War featuring more than 1, 500 original artifacts, photographs, dioramas, videos, and interactive components.

The last stop is at Stone Mountain Park to visit the Stone Mountain Confederate Memorial Carving that depicts three Confederate leaders of the Civil War, President Jefferson Davis and Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson.

“Roger is absolutely the best guide we have ever had anywhere. His depth of knowledge and understanding of the history of Atlanta and Georgia and the civil war and how it all relates to civil rights and present issues is profound. He connects it all in a way that makes sense and increases understanding of all sides of each issue. We have had 3 tours with Roger and each one has been phenomenal.”
